Thyroid fuction:

The thyroid gland, resembling a butterfly, is an endocrine gland responsible for producing thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) that are released into the bloodstream as needed by the body [1]. For instance, if you feel cold and require energy to warm up, your body signals the brain to release Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), which instructs the thyroid gland to produce the necessary thyroid hormones responsible for generating energy to heat up your body.

However, TSH cannot directly communicate with the thyroid gland. It relies on a secondary messenger system to transmit the message and prompt the production of thyroid hormones within the thyroid gland. If this messenger system is functioning normally, the thyroid gland will produce and release the appropriate amount of thyroid hormones into the bloodstream, providing the necessary energy and warmth.

At times, the messenger system may be impaired or dysfunctional, hindering the transmission of the message from TSH to the thyroid gland. Consequently, the thyroid gland either fails to produce thyroid hormones or produces insufficient amounts, resulting in an inadequate heat supply and continued feelings of coldness. Since your body still requires energy to warm up, it continuously signals the brain about the cold sensation, leading to the brain’s persistent release of TSH, often resulting in elevated TSH levels [2].

Moreover, an abnormal thyroid function may arise due to an increased oxidant load in the thyroid gland. The elevated oxidant levels can trigger the immune system to produce antibodies that mistakenly attack the thyroid gland, diminishing its ability to function properly. This autoimmune condition is known as Hashimoto’s disease (see Hashimoto’s disease below) [1].

To restore optimal thyroid function, it is crucial to address the issues with the messenger system and reduce the oxidant load within the thyroid gland to prevent the formation of antibodies.

Research suggests that supplementation with Myo-Inositol may improve the secondary messenger pathways necessary for conveying messages across cell membranes in response to TSH [3]. Additionally, the antioxidant effects of Selenium supplementation have shown potential in improving thyroid function by potentially reducing the levels of detrimental antibodies that target the thyroid gland [4].

Combining Myo-Inositol and Selenium supplementation may offer a synergistic effect, helping restore optimal thyroid function and enhancing overall well-being.

Combination of Myo-Inositol and Selenium:

The findings of a study conducted by Pace et al. suggest that both selenium and myo-inositol supplementation may help to mitigate the progression of autoimmune thyroiditis by reducing autoimmune activity and improving thyroid function.

This study supports the potential therapeutic role of selenium and myo-inositol supplementation in autoimmune thyroiditis. These supplements may help reduce thyroid inflammation, improve thyroid function, and modulate the immune response [5].

What is HASHIMOTO’S disease ?

Hashimoto’s disease, also known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, is an autoimmune disorder characterized by the immune system attacking the thyroid gland, a small gland located in the neck. This immune response leads to inflammation and damage to the thyroid tissue, ultimately causing an underactive thyroid or hypothyroidism [1].

Diagnosing Hashimoto’s disease can be challenging due to several factors. For instance, the presence of antibodies associated with Hashimoto’s can be detected in blood tests many years before the development of noticeable thyroid dysfunction [2]. However, physicians may not routinely test patients experiencing symptoms for these antibodies, which can lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment.

To improve the diagnosis and management of Hashimoto’s disease, an integrative approach is needed. This involves considering various factors that may contribute to the development and progression of the disease, such as genetic predisposition, hormonal changes during pregnancy or puberty, and environmental influences [3]. By understanding the multifactorial nature of Hashimoto’s disease, healthcare providers can better identify at-risk individuals and implement appropriate preventive and therapeutic strategies.

MYTHYROX and HASHIMOTO’S or SUBCLINICAL HYPOTHYROIDISM.

Myo-Inositol may play a role in the secondary messenger pathway of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) signaling, and its deficiency could impact thyroid sensitivity to TSH. Selenium deficiency may contribute to an imbalance of antibodies affecting the thyroid gland. Treatment with Myo-Inositol and Selenium supplementation may have promise in improving thyroid function and modulating the immune response in patients with autoimmune thyroiditis.

Studies have suggested that treatment with a combination of Myo-Inositol and Selenium supplementation can have beneficial effects on patients with subclinical hypothyroidism due to autoimmune thyroiditis. This treatment may lead to a decrease in TSH levels and a decline in antithyroid autoantibodies, indicating an improvement in thyroid function and a potential immunomodulatory effect [1,2]
